Scribble Prompts

What are they? Why use them?

We’ve all been the person who collects insightful “How To Write__” tips. I’ve put together writing prompts related to advice for my scribblers to help them move beyond the first step of collecting and onto using those techniques in their own writing!

The Purpose Of Writing Prompts

Writing prompts jar the scribbler out of their own dull life and onto new creative tangents. Moreso, prompts worth their salt improve your writing! It’s one thing to work on an idea that sparks the imagination but not all ideas are equal; not all will help you focus your writing.

Why Use Prompts?

I would argue writing prompts offer more than inspiration. They help you hone your skills or form new ones that give a foundation to carry over to all of your stories! In my journey to improve my writing I decided to create prompts that centered around advice I had saved in my journals.

For example, I avoided the process of creating physical descriptions completely when I began writing. It’s difficult for me to visualize my character’s. Abstract themes (Good vs Evil, Courage vs Heroism, ect…) and the internal struggles they created within my character’s were more exciting to me than the nitty-gritty details. Or so I thought…

As I learned more, I found that when I do figure out what my character’s look like I learn so much about who they are. This is so obvious but I breezed past it because making a description meaningful involves effort beyond that of reaching into a bag of random traits and slapping them together. The best ones add an implicit aspect to the narrative.

To practice this aspect of my writing I made prompts that challenged me to put the advice I’d gathered into practice. You will find a series of prompts and an explanation of the techniques. I believe it’s much better to “work smarter, not harder”! I am creating a series of writing prompts that are catered to specific feedback. The first in the series will cover Physical Descriptions, but my focus is to explore more topics in the near future.

Happy scribbling,
